Activated Carbon
Activated carbon is a versatile material with a broad range of applications. Created by either a thermal or chemical activation process of carbonaceous materials, this process develops a porous structure in the material which gives the activated carbon a very high surface area up to over 3,000m2 per gram. This enables the carbon to efficiently adsorb contaminants from air, water, gases and liquids. Activated carbon is typically produced from carbon-rich materials such as coal, wood, or coconut shells.
Some common applications for activated carbon are:
Water purification:
-
For removal of chlorine, heavy metals, organic pollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) to deliver clean and safe water according to authorities regulations and directives.
-
Air and gas filtration:
Where activated carbon can be applied in HVAC systems, industrial processes and consumer products to eliminate odours, VOC’s and airborne toxins.
-
Industrial processes:
For example in chemical manufacturing, pharmaceutical industries, and metallurgies to purify solutions, remove colorants and ensure product quality by adsorbing impurities.
-
Environmental protection:
To capture toxic compounds and mercury emissions from flue gases. Active carbon can also be used to capture PFAS in a safe and effective manner.
-
Food and beverage:
To remove colour and contaminants like PCB and dioxins.
Sparks can supply activated carbon as granules, powder or pellets from different carbon sources like coconut shells and coal. Each application is customized, and Sparks will help you find the optimal solution for your specific challenge.
Ion Exchange Resins
Ion exchange resins are synthetic polymer beads designed to facilitate the exchange of specific ions within a solution, making them essential for separation, purification and decontamination processes across a variety of industries. The ion exchange resins act as selective sponges, replacing undesirable ions in liquids (like calcium, magnesium, or heavy metals) for more desirable ones (such as sodium or hydrogen) typically through cationic or anionic exchange mechanisms.
Some common applications for ion exchange resins are:
-
Water softening and purification:
Where ion exchange resins remove hardness caused by ions like calcium and magnesium, replacing them with sodium or hydrogen ions to produce soft, purified water for domestic, municipal, and industrial use.
-
Industrial water treatment:
Where they are critical in producing high-purity water for power generation, semiconductor manufacturing, and boiler feed systems, preventing scale, corrosion, and equipment damage.
-
Heavy metal- and contaminant removal:
In which ion exchange resins selectively remove toxic metals (like lead and arsenic) and other contaminants from wastewater and process streams, supporting environmental compliance and safety.
-
Food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processing:
Where ion exchange resins can purify juices, sugar syrups, and pharmaceuticals by removing unwanted ions, improving product quality and enabling ingredient separation or conversion.
-
Nuclear and Chemical Industries:
Where they facilitate the separation and purification of radioactive elements, metals, and specialty chemicals, contributing to safe waste management and efficient material processing.
With a wide range of applications, Sparks can supply ion exchange resins tailored to your needs.
Mobile filter solutions
Sparks can supply mobile filter units with activated carbon and other media for purification of gases and liquids. Our mobile filters are available in several different sizes tailored to your industry demand, and with our logistics concept we can also recycle or manage the proper disposal of used adsorbents.
With our mobile filter units, we can offer a total service package with testing to ensure the correct adsorbent is chosen, rental of filter units from stock with no investment cost, plug and play solutions with necessary piping and couplings for easy installation, and elimination of on-site carbon handling.
